Dallas Zoo Grieves Over Death of KeKe Elephant
January 1969 - May 12, 2008
KeKe the elephant passed away today shortly after 4 p.m. following a severe case of intestinal distress. Dallas Zoo veterinarians and zookeepers have been treating her symptoms for almost two weeks and consulting experts throughout the country for additional methods to help her.
KeKe’s medical history includes chronic colic and she had been known to eat rocks and dirt throughout her life. About two weeks ago, zookeepers noticed problems when KeKe refused to eat. The gastric system of elephants is difficult to assess because veterinarians are unable to use sonograms and radiography due to elephants’ massive size. The Dallas Zoo consulted with veterinarians and elephant experts throughout the country.
Her treatment included antibiotics, intravenous fluids, and round-the-clock care. She was fitted with a special harness to support her weight. On Monday, she collapsed and was lifted with the help of a crane. Her condition deteriorated rapidly and officials made the difficult decision to euthanize her.
“KeKe was a kind and gentle giant,” said Gregg Hudson, executive director of the Dallas Zoo and The Dallas Aquarium at Fair Park. “Children loved to visit KeKe and her long-time companion Jenny the elephant. We now are monitoring Jenny carefully and will make any future decisions based on her well being. We regret that KeKe did not get to see the beautiful African savanna expansion that we are in the midst of planning.”
The average life expectancy for an African elephant in professionally managed zoological facilities is 33 years, similar to those in the wild, according to a study conducted by Robert J. Weise, Ph.D., director of animal collections at the San Diego Zoo.
“We have been fortunate that the animals in our Zoo have lived long lives,” Hudson added. “However, that means that expert veterinarian care faces challenges when the animals reach advanced ages.”
KeKe came to the Dallas Zoo on Sept. 26, 2003, from the Caldwell Zoo in Waco, Texas. She was born in the wild in January 1969.
