Giraffes
Fascinating Giraffe Facts
Giraffes can live 10-15 years in the wild and over 25 years in human care.
These gentle giants are the world’s tallest living land animals. An adult male can be 18 feet tall – that’s taller than three adult humans!
Each giraffes’ markings are as unique as our fingerprints.
Challenges in the Wild
Human encroachment: Giraffes’ habitats are becoming increasingly fragmented and degraded due to human development, urban sprawl, and agricultural intensification.
Climate change: Prolonged droughts caused by climate change result in shrinking giraffe habitats.
Dallas Zoo Saving Saving Giraffes
The Dallas Zoo supports this amazing conservation organization:
The Dallas Zoo has partnered with the Giraffe Conservation Foundation (GCF), which protects Nubian giraffe through anti-poaching patrols. Field workers remove snares from giraffe habitat and deploy a targeted veterinary response for giraffe caught in traps. We also support GCF’s education programs that focus on building awareness and community involvement in giraffe conservation. | |
You Can Help Save Giraffes in the Wild
Today only around 100,000 giraffes are living in the wild, which is a 30% decline in populations over the past 40 years. Changing climates have had a drastic effect on the landscape in Africa, making decreased food and water availability a major threat. Together we can help create a better world for giraffes by reducing our energy consumption at home to combat climate change.
